Because of reasons we all know, Clash Festival 2020/2021 came to you. Clash entered your living room with an online expo and (live) stream program that managed to translate its unique proposition beyond the physical. We’ve uploaded all the material on this page for you to re-experience this unique digital rendition of Clash.

Edwin was supposed to create one of the biggest installations of Clash in the main room of Grand Theatre. Luckily he could offer an alternative for our stream by creating a trippy soundscape. Listen to this with your headphones on and see where it takes you.

HABITAT (video teaser)

Prepare for an otherworldly experience! Replacing the real-life experience is a video teaser of Heleen Blanken’s fully data-driven installation HABITAT. HABITAT documents and visualizes natural growth based on 3D scans. For this project Heleen joined forces with NAIVI, who developed the custom-built software for the installation and sound artist Stijn van Beek who composed the soundscapes. Next year we will showcase the life size HABITAT experience in the awesome Rabo Studio in Forum Groningen. We recommend you watch this video full screen with headphones.

Finnish Ukrainian Netherlandish Congolese R&B Duo F.U.N.C. playing live at OOST treating us to a fierce mix of folky future R&B. Chai Blaq performing songs from their recently released debut EP Kintsugi, which was included in the top 5 best EP’s of the year by Jamz Supernova on BBC Radio 1Xtra.

Abstract beats, melancholic chord progressions and layered, percussive, grooves; Phole creates a refreshing style that pushes the boundaries of nu jazz, down tempo and trip hop. From his basement in a former biological research center he is constantly experimenting with acoustic instruments, field recordings and worn out second-hand synths. He just released his new track “The Waiting Game” which he celebrated with a live solo set in OOST!

The outbreak of the coronavirus demands creative thinking: we work at home, get together with friends online and we follow online courses. Not being able to get together to visit a concert hall, museum or theatre, we also have to look for alternative ways to experience art. Time for Studium Generale Groningen to look into their archives for lectures on the power of art and creativity and share them with you.

BLEEDING EDGE 2020 (A/V set)

South London-based post-genre music and performing arts duo c / a brought us their thrilling live cinematic A/V experience Bleeding Edge. It’s a study of humankind, blood loss, non-verbal communication, an abysmal future vs. salvation, virtual rave culture and internet entities that intertwines with a network of ideas and stories. And to make it even more special: this was the online premiere!

Kettel returns with a full ambient album and that’s a real special treat knowing that this is only his second ambient album; the first one being the legendary Volleyed Iron, released in 2004. Once you get to know Dwingeloo Life Extension, there’s a lo-fi, buzzy intimacy to it. A great addition to our online exposition.

Closing the online experience was our very own DJ Spoorbiels playing a set from his living room in Groningen!  For this set DJ Spoorbiels is trying to avoid Facebooks’ copyright algorhythms by not playing anything by Beyonce, Backstreet Boys or Bonnie Tyler.

Craving fresh new views on the world and the city? Let Clash hook you up, with the help of a unique location and a complementary combination of local and national artistic merit. During the first week of Noorderzon the imposing former EMG factory functions as a one-off hotbed. Where works of some of the country’s foremost visual artists like Jeisson Drenth and Harmen Meinsma share ground with a Kunstpunt-curated program and some of Groningen’s most exciting youngsters. A live music program tops the cake.

Clash Series 1.1: Noorderzon is a 1.5m event. During live sets you get assigned a safely placed seat. At the exhibition you’re free to roam around and experience the works, provided that you keep your distance from others.
